Jake couldn't even begin to guess at what could be bothering her. If it was a family problem, surely he would have been one of the firts to find out, she'd have told him immediatelly. It wasn't something to do with her friends either, because there was no reason to keep stuff like that from him. Not much annoyed Jake, but this was one of the things. He was completely honest and open with Brooke, so if she claimed that they were so close, like he believed them to be, why couldn't she do the same for him? It didn't seem fair. And of course he cared about Brooke, and he didn't like to see her upset, but if she didn't tell him what was wrong, there was no way for her to be happy and no way for him to help her.
Then Jake thought about it for a moment. Did he really want to know? If she wasn't telling him, and was so nervous about it, maybe it wasn't a good thing for him to know? Suddenly feeling a little bit freaked out, Jake looked over as she sat down next to him, frowning softly. Her next words made him even more nervous. He was such a guy, he thought for a moment with irony. All this deep stuff was weird. This was why girls had friends who were girls. To talk to about all this crazy stuff that had them acting all weird. Guys just weren't equiped to handle this. Feeling a bit claustrophobic, Jake stood up. A tiny part of his brain felt bad because he knew Brooke was freezing, and he was always warm, but he needed to breathe for a moment. "Urm, listen. Brooke. I don't know what's going on, or why things would be awkward between us or anything. But I'm freaking out here a bit, alright?" He told her gently, before taking a few steps back while pulling his packet of Marlboro Reds from his back pocket and quickly pulling one out. He kept his warm hazel eyes on Brooke as he lit it up and took a drag. That made thinking so much easier. "Urm.. Talk to Lex about it or something, you know I don't really handle these emotional chats well. Just let me know how you're doing and stuff, ye? I'll call you later." He promised her with a quick smile, starting to walk away. He put the cigarette up to his lips and inhaled again, wondering what the hell was going on. Everone was going crazy these days. Brooke should have known better than to have that kind of deep, complicated conversation with him. Jake was light and casual. He didn't know what to do when things got too serious. It was scary.
